We are on Highway 11 (the East Coast highway) near Chenggong Township, Taitung County — roughly an hour’s drive north of Taitung city. It is genuinely rural out here, which is the appeal, but it does mean the journey needs a little planning.
The short version: get yourself to Taitung by plane or train, pick up a rental car there, and drive up the coast. Send us your arrival details and we will help you work out the last leg.
Step 1 — Get to Taitung
By air (fastest)
Taipei Songshan Airport (TSA) to Taitung Airport (TTT) takes about one hour. UNI Air and Mandarin Airlines both fly the route, several times a day.
Important: these flights leave from Songshan, the small city airport — not Taoyuan International (TPE), where most international flights arrive. Allow time to transfer between the two.
By train (most scenic)
Taipei Main Station to Taitung Station takes roughly 3.5 to 5.5 hours depending on the service — look for Tze-Chiang, Puyuma or Taroko express trains. Fares are around NT$940–1,350. The line runs down the east coast and the views are worth the extra hours over flying.
Book ahead through the Taiwan Railway Administration — express trains to Taitung sell out on weekends and holidays.
By car from Taipei
About 326 km and 5–6 hours. Long, but a good drive if you have the time.

About renting a car
We recommend it. The east coast is spread out, buses are sparse, and the whole point of Highway 11 is being able to stop wherever you like.
- To drive in Taiwan as a visitor you need an International Driving Permit issued in your home country, together with your home driving licence. Get the IDP before you leave — you cannot obtain one in Taiwan.
- Rental desks are at Taitung Airport and near Taitung Station.
- Taiwan drives on the right.
- Scooter rental usually requires a motorcycle endorsement on your IDP. Highway 11 has fast-moving traffic and long empty stretches — a car is the safer choice for most visitors.
There is free parking at the guesthouse, and a 26 A EV charger. It is an overnight charger rather than a fast one, so plan on leaving the car plugged in while you sleep. Please tell us in advance if you are arriving in an electric car so we can keep it free for you.
Arriving without a car?
It is possible — take the Dingdong Bus up Highway 11 and get off at Chenggong — but you will be fairly stuck once you are here, as there is nothing within walking distance. Write to us before you book and tell us how you plan to arrive; we will tell you honestly whether it will work, and can help arrange a pickup or a local taxi.
While you are on this coast
- Sanxiantai — the island with the eight-arch footbridge, a short drive north of us. The best-known sight on this stretch of coast.
- Chenggong Fishing Harbour — a working harbour. The fish auction starts around noon (12pm), and it is worth timing your day around: it is loud, fast and completely unstaged. Very good, very plain seafood nearby afterwards.
- Baxian Caves (Basiandong) — prehistoric sea caves further up the coast.
- Dulan — an old sugar-factory village turned artists’ and surfers’ hangout, on the way back down towards Taitung city.
- The coast road itself. Highway 11 is one of the great drives in Taiwan. Give it a whole day.
